Suttle Lake Shore Trail - The minimal elevation change on this trail makes it an ideal hike for people of all ages and fitness levels. The trail follows the wooded shoreline of the lake and provides many opportunities for fishing or picnicking along the way. On Summer days it is possible to watch a variety of water sports including water-skiing and windsurfing from the shore. The trail passes through all of the developed recreation areas on the lake, making it easily accessible from any point. As you look around the around the forested area surrounding Suttle Lake you will see some trees that are healthy and others that appear to be dying. The healthy trees with long green needles are pines. The affected trees are comprised of true firs and Douglas firs that are being defoliated by an infestation of Western Spruce Budworm. This area is part of nearly 150,000 acres on the Deschutes and Willamette National Forests that are being affected by the outbreak. These insects are a natural part of the environment, but have reached epidemic levels due to drought, natural fire exclusion, and selected logging practice. Forest Service scientists have been closely monitoring this epidemic. In the spring of 1993, the budworm population dropped drastically. If you plan on fishing in the lake make sure to have an Oregon fishing license. These may be purchased at local sporting goods stores or at Suttle Lake Resort.

Directions from Sisters: Proceed west on Highway 20 for 14 miles to Road 2070, the road to the Suttle Lake campgrounds. Follow Road 2070 for approximately 3 miles. The best place to access the trail is at the Suttle Lake Picnic Area just north of Link Creek Campground. The trail may also be accessed from any of the other established recreation areas on Road 2070 or from the Cinder Beach Day Use Area near Suttle Lake Resort.
