Rhododendron Island Forest Campground -
Rhododendron Island Forest Campground is located approximately 36 miles from Oakridge at an elevation of 5,400 feet. This campground has a few sites with no toilets and no potable water. This small island near the west shore of the lake is covered with rhododendrons as its name indicates. They bloom in early to midsummer and give the island exceptional charm. Please be gentle to the environment and leave no trace of your stay. It is an easy paddle from Shadow Bay, but the island can also be reached from either Islet or North Waldo Campgrounds with a little more effort. Morning and evening offers the quietist water for canoeing. The mosquito population is high from June to mid-August and can be quite bothersome, so be prepared!
Directions from Oakridge: Proceed east on Hwy. 58 for 25 miles to the Waldo Lake Road (FS road 5897). Follow Waldo Lake Road for 6 1/2 miles to the Shadow Bay turnoff. Follow signs to the Shadow Bay Boat Ramp. Proceed by boat, about 1 1/2 miles northeast, to Rhododendron Island. (boat access ONLY)
